Recently my assistant Jen and her sweet little family wanted to have a Christmas session done. She gave me the guidelines of “clean and easy.” She wanted a look that was uncomplicated and well…inside. It just started getting chilly here in the Valley so she decided she would rather be warm. I was so over freezing fingers to shoot with.
I was excited to get a family in the studio finally. I had been through the rush of all the mini-sessions and many of them were shot outdoors. Now don’t get me wrong, there is something lovely about trees and sunshine. However being a lifestyle and advertising photographer I really love when I can take a family session inside, control the light and produce easy to edit, clean images.
We opened our co-op studio last January and over the summer finished the natural light space. This was a perfect place to shoot her session. The most important thing to remember about shooting small ones is that they are only interested in things that they consider to be fun. Set the expectation early that sessions with babies and pre-schoolers do not always go as planned. Maybe it is because I am a Mom and understand moments are fleeting, I just think the “other” faces are just as great as the perfect ones.
Babies are gonna do what they are gonna do. I will tell you that sometimes too many cooks in the kitchen can make for a confused baby. So one parent, positioned behind camera is ideal if they need someone to focus on. So is putting toys on top of your camera. 🙂
Of course the session wouldn’t be complete without family images. Love these guys, so blessed to have been photographing their lives since their wedding.
